Kapeenniemi is a nature park areafor recreation and fishing controlled by the surrounding communities. It belong to a larger Natura-2000 protected area.
Kapeenniemi ridge is one of a series of ridges starting from Nurmijärvi in the south extending to Pyhäjärvi area in the north close to Saarijärvi.

The rapids are part of an extensive water route between Keitele and Päijänne lakes and are protected by law. Encompassing several old and valuablegrove-like spruce swamps and ancient trees, amongst many other natural beauties.

Within this area one can find an abundance of native animals like gliding squirrel, otter, hare, moose, white tail caribou, menganser, goldeneye, capercaillie, woodpecker, hazel grouse, and, of course, fishes like trout and grayling.

In addition there are many historical sites such as Honkaristi, Ristinkivi and cottage village. Honkaristi is revered for its religious services that date from the 15th century.
